If Bluey and Dune had a crossover.
If Portishead would make FX pedals
Partially, accidentally also inspired by Arcane as I was watching it while working on this.
Note: This is entirely fictional and no way commissioned by or associated with the Portishead
The Day of the Triffids
Another one for See Movie Make Art. Carnivorous plants are cool.
Gaming Arcades
There’s something interesting about gaming arcades. Technology of the past seem to have been having a bit of a resurgence in the last few years, vinyl records, cassette tapes, film cameras and arcade machine. I do love going to arcade bars and playing games that came out before I was born. I grew up after the age of arcade, when home consoles were already quite big so it isn’t nostalgia that makes them interesting. I guess it’s just a subculture which I can in some order identify with. Here’s my attempt at making old abandoned fictional gaming arcade machines.
22, A Million - Bon Iver
Bon Iver’s album 22, A Million interpreted as a wine brand with good packaging but underwhelming taste.
Dirty Computer
From Janelle Monae’s album Dirty Computer.
Flight of the Navigator
When the ship from Flight of the Navigator goes off its rails, much like its lead actor in later life.
Blacker the berry, sweeter the juice
An artwork made for @seemoviemakeart on Kendrick Lamar’s album, To Pimp A Butterfly, one of my favourite albums of all time. Lot of my favourite musicians, Thundercat, Flying Lotus, Kamasi Washington worked on it. Though album tackles heavier subject matters of guilt, resentment, regret, metamorphosis, unequality, I chose a lighter direction.
Japanese Vending Machine
I find Japanese vending machine very interesting. Not only are they incredibly convenient and ever-present, they also look distinctly Japanese. No other country has vending machines like Japan when you see a picture or a drawing (or 3D render), you can instantly recognise (atleast I can).
Itachi いたち
This scene started its life as Loop de loop animation but I ran out of time. It sat on my hard drive for about 3 months until I noticed it and thought I could do some with it. いたち (Itachi) is the Japanese word for weasel. But in Japan it can also have other means. Japan Subculture Research Center reckons:
itachi (鼬・いたち): a weasel, but in the yakuza world also slang for a very good police detective. いたちごっこ(itachgokko) “to act like a weasel” refers to a game that Japanese children play in which it is impossible for either side to win. The police versus the yakuza war which has been going on since 1965 is often referred to as itachigokko.
Sticking chopstick in rice vertically is a big taboo in Japan, as it is reserved for funeral practices. But in this scene it kind of works.
Iridescence
This was made for @seemoviemakeart at Foxtel where we watch a film and make posters or other art inspired by the film. This one was for the film Annihilation. I wanted to experiment with an iridescent shader, and came up with this one in Redshift.
Cake I
A first of another series I might do. I cannot bake anything (apart from simple chocolate brownies) if my life depended on it but I can make one in Cinema4D. Inspired by the mind-bogglingly beautiful cakes made by Katherine Sabbath and My Little Panda Kitchen
Specimen I
Thinking of doing a series of these, I've already got ideas for the rest. Sculpted in 3D Coat, jars modelled in Cinema 4D, textured in Substance Painter and rendered on Redshift.
THX 1138
Movie poster for THX 1138 for @seemoviemakeart. I modelled the tray quickly in Cinema 4D, sculpted the crinkles in 3D Coat, rendered in Redshift.
Colourful Goo
Some liquid simulation tests with X-Particles
Work In Progress
A work in progress for a short film I'm working on.
Sculpting
Trying out sculpting in 3DCoat. Auto-retopology function is insanely good! Granted people might not like to use it for characters, it's more than enough for assets that won't deform too much and motion graphics. Might try out working with photogrammetry in the future.
Textured in Substance Painter and rendered in Redshift
Plants
Building some plant assets for a personal project I am currently working on.
Quick Redshift render
More Redshift fun.
Death At A Funeral
This started off as an entry for a film poster challenge within the Foxtel design team called See Movie Make Art. It was rendered in Cycles4D, and being a simple scene it rendered fairly quickly around 7 minutes per frame. Cycles4D is however a unbiased pathtracer, it does not have any adaptive algorithms. A few months later I was trying out Redshift renderer and decided to rebuild this scene to mainly try to learn it. The rendertimes I was getting (1 minute 20 seconds per frame) was so good I decided to render out a quick 125f sequence.
